Living Word Christian Center is undergoing IRS audit -- CREW has filed two IRS complaints against that church
CREW has filed two IRS complaints against the Living Word Christian Center:
CREW has filed a second IRS complaint against the Living Word Christian Center. We filed an IRS complaint against the same church last October for engaging in electioneering. Ths time, we allege that the Senior Pastor and Founder, James "Mac" Hammond, has profited from the organization. The problem is that, as an insider, he shouldn't be benefiting from the non-profit entity.
Based on reports in the Star-Tribune, the IRS is actively investigating Living Word.
Facing complaints about his church's tax-exempt status in February 2007, the Rev. Mac Hammond took to the pulpit on live television and said he would "almost welcome an IRS audit."
About two months later, Hammond got his wish, according to documents recently filed in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis.
The Internal Revenue Service is conducting an unusual investigation into whether compensation and loan deals between the Living Word Christian Center of Brooklyn Park (LWCC) and its pastor violated laws for tax-exempt organizations.
The IRS has asked the court to force the church to comply with a demand for detailed financial information. The church failed to respond to a March summons.

Here's some free advice: Refrain from multiple public accusations lest you find yourself in the midst of defending yourself against slanderous/libelous allegations.
I don't know Mac Hammond, nor have I attended a service at his church, but the proof of exceptional evidence, in religious circles, is harder to come by and even more difficult to comprehend.
Those who worship in his presence feel the sanctity of his ministry and need to bear the additional burden of unverifiable allegations and accusations.

catholic church political handouts in August 24, 2008
The catholic church is up to their old tricks. We attended mass on Sunday & got a "voters guide" attached to our "parish bulletin". I contacted the Bishop's Conf. & St. Augustine diocese office to be told "educational material" is covered in 501 IRS. This has every earmark of a sample ballot. When, oh when, is the IRS going to take away the tax expempt status of these lobbyist? I would be happy to challenge them. They stated that they are going to do it in the "general election"

Not only churches
After churches, I hope some attention is paid to other types of non-profit organizations who use their donations and paid staff time to influence elections. For a start, make NPOs more accountable to the public (public notices of meetings and meetings open to the public). There has been a very rapid increase in the number of NPOs because, I feel, they allow sheltering of finances.
Re: Not only churches
Ms. O'Connor;
Your characterization of non-profits as "they allow sheltering of finances" is not only unfair, but uniformed and inaccurate as well. Do some NPO's shelter their finances? Sure ... as do some for-profits, government entities and individual citizens.
Let's try not to be so stereotypical.
